Palazzetto Grasso
In 2022, we acquired this charming Palazzetto in Ortigia, the old town of Syracuse, and have lovingly restored it since then. We decided to name it Palazzetto Grasso in homage to the Grasso family from Syracuse, who had owned and lived in the house for many generations. It is located on Via Roma, just steps from the water, one of the most picturesque streets in Ortigia, leading directly to the sea. At the end of this street and next to the palazzetto lies the delightful Cala Rossa, a small beach.
The small palazzetto dates back to 1735 and is built in the Baroque style. It offers 150 square meters of living space, including the ground floor entrance area laid with beautiful grey river stones, as well as an 80 square meter rooftop terrace with sea views.
The kitchen and the cabinets are made of the finest walnut wood and finished with a lightly matte patina and a color that subtly evokes the 1950s. The kitchen features a 6-meter-long stainless steel countertop where the sink and gas hobs appear seamlessly integrated. The long Murano glass lamp above the countertop was also made in Murano.
We restored the old fireplace in the living room and decided to design a new, larger fireplace with a base made of lava stone from Mount Etna. The large chandelier was designed by me and crafted by Gianni Seguso, one of the oldest glassworks in Murano, Venice.
The walls in both bedrooms are covered with raffia, and the floors are laid with thick coconut carpets. With the windows open, you can hear the sea every night.
The master bathroom was completely gutted and redesigned from scratch, featuring red marble throughout. Both washbasins in the two bathrooms were carved from large blocks of stone - one sculpted from lava stone and the other from “Pietra di Modica”.
Through a small patio paved with beautiful black river stones, you can access the large terrace. Here, like an outdoor living room, you can enjoy the beautiful warm evenings or grill and cook using the outdoor kitchen. From there, you can observe the sea waves and the picturesque narrow street.
